OK, so I have to make a confession. I have a hard time placing fabrics together that just don't go together. Fashion for the last couple of years has been nuts...in my opinion! Everything is mis-matched. Florals with leather, with stripes, with neons, with a purple scarf, yellow ballet slippers, and a russian hat - and you're couture! Like this girl

Tavi Gevinson she's a really big deal in fashion right now... I just don't get it. In fact, from the look on her face and her pose, maybe she's just as confused as I am.

Here's what I do get - how a few pieces of cleverly placed material can become something wonderful...I get it - I just don't have the confidence to do it.

Right now I am loving this: Car Seat Book Holder

I would never have come up with this - well maybe the design, but it would be all coordinating colors & similar fabrics...cuz I'm stuck up like that.

I love the idea so much that I am going to make one for my boys...and I will try to be like a hippie and just pull random pieces from my fabric piles and turn it into something beautiful like she did...

Honestly forget I said that, I have a bunch of dark colored courduroy that will make a beautiful little car library...I'm such a dud!

A vintage find...

As we drove past this lovely gem hanging on a rack full of basic boring clothing at a sweet little old lady's yardsale. I screamed, "Stop the truck... I have to see that dress!" Ten minutes later I was sitting in the passenger seat running my fingers over it's ornate embroidery and adoring it's lovely design. I could not wait to put it on and was dreaming of the next event I could wear it to. My anxiety grew with each stop light until we reached our home.

I ran inside and tried it on. "Adorable. Simply romantic! Honey, zip it up, zip it up!"

My rib cage and bust did not share the same enthusiam.

Our Giving Back Update

In June we traveled to Seattle to participate in the Seattle Rock N Roll 1/2 Marathon with our "Giving Back" Sponsoreeeeeee Jason. In March I posted that we would be donating $1.00 from each TotRags purchase to support cancer research and treatment. I love the thrill of a good race, especially those that support good causes! So my sweet husband and his old friend from high school (who is a cancer survivor) ran, and ran, and ran...you get the picture? 13.1 miles to be exact. And they completed their race 10 minutes under their goal time of 2 hours. It was quite a site to see - all those runners - they are all so amazing and we are honored to be able to help support!

Then only a month later, we joined Jason on a grueling hike near Jackson Hole WY. Yes - those are the Grand Tetons in the background. As you can see, treatment has not slowed him down a bit. It is our hope that others will be as successful as Jason. By purchasing TotRags you can be a part of the cure(s) too!

On being creative...

A friend of mine told me yesterday that she does not have a creative bone in her body. Funny thing is - when you walk into her home, you feel very calm and at ease. She has a wonderful decorating sense. Her walls are beautifully sponge painted. Her kitchen cabinetry, though 23 years old, has been completely transformed into something that looks new and trendy - by her hands. And her home is not in any way cluttered - just the right amount of decor. I told her she was dead wrong about her personal assessment. We are all creative in our own ways - that's the wonder of God - we are his greatest creation. To deny our own creativity would be like ignoring the parts of ourselves that God so cleverly crafted.

The other day I read this wonderful post over at Soule Mama and it reminded me of when I really started to go my creative route. I have always loved working with material - ALWAYS. I made my own Barbie clothing when I was 8. I bought thrifted dresses and re-constructed them for my high school proms. I've been making my own curtains since my teen years. And every now and then I sit down and draw up what is floating around in my head (though I won't share those with you cause well, my sketches tend to fall a little into the "chicken scratch" category) Now I sew almost daily - it's like an itch that I cannot scratch hard enough. While I was searching deep for an old picture of my huge pregnant belly to grace the Mother's Day post on my other blog today - I ran accross some other pictures of creative projects from my past. I thought it would be fun to share the stories behind some of those projects. Hope you Enjoy these three little stories - and that your Mother's day is SWEETLY (Pillsbury dough-like) GRAND!

The quilt I painstakinly put together for my -before he was my husband- husband for him to remember the time he spent in the beautiful country of Venezuela. If you can't tell what the picture on the quilt is, well - try stickinng that creative bone of yours out just a little bit more...and maybe put a Pina Colada in your hand. Sadly, these 3000+ squares are no longer with us. Just because I am creative does not mean that I always exercise common sense...but that's another story.

In college, one of my roomates had this awesome huge American Flag framed print that we hung in the dining room of our shared townhome. So I made some totally crazy American Pride (can't even call them drapes) drapes and seat cushions. Still LOOking for a picture of that...but a few years later, I still had a lot of the red-white-blue material, so I figured, why not? And came up with this very unique bathroom on-a-budget look.

My wedding gown had a very unique look to it. I always wanted to make my own wedding gown - but the cards did not fall that way. So I found a gown that truly matched my personality. The lace was definitely not typical- just like me. I wanted to wear something in my hair other than my veil, but did not want a crystal or pearled Tiara and wasn't happy with anything I found in the stores. So I crafted my own hairpiece and (with the help of my wonderful MIL) veil to match the gown. It wasn't perfect but I loved how it turned out and it's the one piece from our wedding that I hope to keep forever.

April 22nd is Earth Day

Here at TotRags, it is my focus to not only create superbly functional and adorable items, but to also make them eco-eco friendly. What is Eco-Eco? My def: Little to no Ecological impact that stems from being Economically smart. Basically, much of the money we all spend and the types of products we purchase negatively impacts the environment due to the amount of waste we create, carbon emissions, wasted resources...the list is long. And the more NEW stuff you buy, the more you add to those problems. (If you've seen the movie Wall-E, you kinda get the gist.)

In an effort to be more Eco-Eco friendly, most of the items in my shop are made from 95% recycled, thrifted, salvaged, or re-purposed materials. I am very proud and happy to use my design and sewing skills in a way that hopefully supports the Eco-Eco cause.

Earth day is April 22nd. What will you commit to this year to better this wonderful place we all call home? I'd love to hear it so - leave your committment(s) in the comments section! I found this very well preserved thrifted vintage towell and just couldn't leave it in the store. Not only is the lime green color so unusual and soothing, but it has that wonderful "like it's carved into the material" flower desgin that is such an unmistakeable "time-stamp". I knew it would make wonderful vintage bibs!

New Full Coverage Bib Design

As promised, I have finished revising the design of the Full Coverage Bib. Thank you all for your suggestions! I took them all into consideration - and this is the fantastically improved result. Same great design, but with a slightly larger neckline and a snap closure. A "Thank you! goes out to this adorable little guy who held still long enough to model the first one!

A disturbing image & a Poll

OK - I'm sorry...but I just had to post this. Am I the only one that finds this image disturbing? And also funny?

I have been thinking of making a similar drool bib - in TotRag fashion of course. I can't however, help but remember that the projection of my baby's drool always seemed to fall directly downward into their lap - totally missing their bibs...except for the constant trail that trickled down the chin and ended up soiling their shirt no matter what bib they had on, or how snugly it fit around their sweet little kissable necks. So i can't help but think that if this bib was to really catch drool it would have to be more like a "no scratch" animal collar. You know, those white plastic funny looking things? And I'm sensing that the general public would deem a "no scratch" collar on a baby to be a bit escessive. I mean, they do make little hand covers for those sharp fingernails.

I'm just not sure yet - so what are your thoughts? Can you see a TotRag drool bib or is it an idea to bury? Thank you in advance for your participation in not only my dry humor - but a poll...my first TotRags poll!

I've been hiding out lately...

...stitching like a madwoman filling orders and creating new designs. Here are some pics of some adorable, yet functional aprons for my friend Nancy. She will be wearing them during her fantastic presentations.

My fav is the short babydoll shirt apron - the fit of it is so attractive, but it's still very practical - it has vendor pockets! I think I'll make myself one or two...and maybe roll them out as a TotRags item. Can't you just see mothers wearing these around town and to the park? So stylish, yet so nice to have your phone, keys, pen & notepad, baby's pacifier, etc... right there tucked inside a pocket on your blouse! (Plus, it protects Mommy's t-shirt for the day.)

Today I decided to put together a new design that I have been planning on "rolling out." This is a diaper clutch and changing pad combo. It is so convenient and practical, yet such a nice looking piece for a mother or grandparent to carry while watching after the little ones. I've decided to call it the TotRags Diaper Roll. I decided yesterday that these diaper clutches are so cool that I would give them away for free. Any purchase of $25 or more in my etsy shop will come with a free complimentary (complimentary meaning what you want it to mean - free -or- matching) diaper clutch...and the items will come rolled and tucked inside it making the clutch the perfect wrapping for a gift. That's a $12.50 value!

I'm on the search for a good cloth tag manufacturer that won't charge me my first born in order to weave custom tags. Know anyone? Something like this...

Absolutely adorable and really really really functional diaper clutch. I made a few different designs and just wasn't happy with them...either the seams showed...or it was too hard to get the contents into it...or the flap was too flappy...but I fixed all those issues and this one is perfect! I will be making more just like it and in different color and material combinations.

Fits 3-4 diapers, a travel wipes case, your cell phone, keys, and a lotion/ointment tube. Perfect for a quick trip to the store or going to the park! There is no point in carrying around a big lunky diaper bag if all you need can hang comfortably from your wrist!

HUGE Christmas Stockings

Found this uglishly amazing 70s King size quilt at Goodwill for pennies...and turned it into twelve quilted stockings, then hand stitched Christmas style designs overtop. Three shown here out of the six I kept (6 others went to a friend). These are large enough to hang on our handrailing without looking inept. What a fun project! 95% recycled.

Since I mostly make my own patterns, this was my first attempt at a cute little toddler pinafore dress pattern and the result. Turned out perfectly...except a little extra thread on the button holes...no biggie - it's covered up by the oversized buttons! Serged hems and double layered for stability. I Love this adorable polka dot toddler dress. Fits size 12-24 months...and of course diaper cover up BLOOMERS!!! that just peek out from under the dress! 95% recycled.

Mommy & Me Aprons

I was at a friends house for a baby shower a few months back and they asked me to make the sugar cookies so I looked around and got familiar with the kitchen, only to find out that this certain friend had no aprons....what's a girl to do without an apron? So I decided that day that her C present would be an apron - made by me. I got a late start, but modeled her apron after one of my own...and then added a unique flair - not only is it reversable, but the neck strap is adjustable, via a tug to the back ties. It turned out so well that I decided to make a whole bunch for C presents...and of course a set to sell on Etsy. 95% recycled of course.
